Fiddler is legendary in my heart, and Yentl is a classic. Barbra and Mandy are icons, and the touchiness is because Avigdor is bi/pansexual without the contemporary understanding of what that is.

The Chosen - blew my mind. So strong. So strange. It challenged everything, and gave me goosebumps after the end scene.

Jewish movies have played such a pivotal role in my life. I have seen all but two of these featured here. I learned Judaism from books and from films.

I live in rural Louisiana and I began practicing Judaism when I was 14 and then converted in my twenties (as did my parents, later on). Books taught me a lot, but films and TV shows taught me things that are not easily picked up, like melodies or what a Shabbat candle lighting looks like. This was all before YouTube.

For example, I had read the Haggadah multiple times, and had done a Seder as a teen, but it wasn’t until When Do We Eat came out, almost twenty years ago, that I got a real sense of how to do the Seder for myself. I literally sat with the Haggadah in my lap and followed along with the film until I felt like I knew what I was doing.

With Yentl - the songs and the music in the soundtrack... That song at the end, A Piece of Sky, is an absolute knockout. :popcorn-yellow-striped-smile:

I loved Crossing Delancey so much, I named my daughter Delancey (and I'm a Gentile.) And don't even get me started on Fiddler ❤ when my son was little, he used to run around the house singing the soundtrack. We took him to see Topal's last tour of Fiddler when he was five. He kept yelling, "Tevye! It's Tevye!"

I love these movies too because it’s also about being an immigrant, a New Yorker, a survivor, theyre very easy to connect with

I am a Gentile with a longstanding fascination with Jewishness. I was in college when The Chosen was released and had already read the novel. It completely blew me away. I am now forming a list of movies you have presented to delve into. Thanks you for the great reviews.

Fiddler on the Roof isn't under the legendary category?! Why not?

I loved Lies My Father Told Me. How the grandpa would spend time with his grandson as they drove the streets of Montreal singing “Rags, bones, bottles.” The end made me cry having not yet lost my grandfathers. It builds empathy.

Oh I am so happy you put A Serious Man in Legends! That film, besides being really funny at times in true Coen brother style, just captures so much of the nuances of what it means to be Jewish - and totally without caricature. There are so many films in the list I haven't seen, so really looking forward to catching up! Just an anecdote about the Dybbuk. When I was at school, we went to see a play version of the Dybbuk at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg. When Leah gets possessed, the actor playing Khanan linked his arms around the actress playing Leah from behind and accompanied her in her every move. When she opened her mouth to speak, it was he who was speaking - it was such an amazing and chilling effect, I will never forget it even though I couldn't even remember all the other details!
