The company pulled its next-generation Ascend 960 DT accelerator forward to the first quarter of 2027, a full nine months ahead of schedule, and committed to a yearly release cadence with the Ascend 970 in 2028 and the Ascend 980 in 2029, each roughly doubling the compute of its predecessor. Alongside the accelerated roadmap, Huawei unveiled the Atlas 960E, a supercomputing system linking 4,096 processors into a single machine capable of 8 exaflops of compute with one petabyte of ultra-fast memory. Deputy Chairman Wang Tao framed it as a permanent commercial platform, not an emergency backup, and domestic demand from Chinese tech giants like Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu has already outstripped Huawei's factory capacity. Cut off from ASML's extreme ultraviolet lithography machines and TSMC's most advanced 3-nanometer and 2-nanometer processes, Huawei's rotating chairman Eric Xu openly admitted the company cannot win on single-chip efficiency against Nvidia. Instead, Huawei is building an entire alternative AI infrastructure stack from the ground up, using chiplet-style architecture scaled to data-center size, near-package optics replacing 48,000 traditional connectors with 5,500 new ones to save over 550 kilowatts, and a new computing architecture called Perium designed to coordinate up to one million processors as a single logical machine. On the software side, Huawei's CANN platform has gone open source with over 5,200 monthly active developers, Ascend chips are now officially listed in PyTorch documentation, and more than 40 major AI models have been trained natively on Huawei hardware. Meanwhile, Nvidia itself admitted in an SEC filing that being locked out of China has given competitors the protected customer base they needed to eventually challenge Nvidia globally. Huawei still faces brutal bottlenecks at SMIC, its manufacturing partner, where older multi-patterning processes produce lower yields, and a global shortage of high-bandwidth memory has pushed Ascend 950 DT prices above 250,000 yuan per chip.
