The engineers had put an imposing steam locomotive on the tracks for the Vienna-Salzburg Western Railway line. With a huge boiler and four driving wheels almost two meters high, the new Class 214 locomotive achieved a power output of nearly 3000 hp. At the time, it was considered the most powerful express steam locomotive in Europe. In its home country, it even reached a speed record of 156 km/h during test runs, and in regular service, it proved its worth even on long journeys. Many German railway workers looked at the Austrian steam locomotive with a touch of envy, as the famous Class 01 was clearly inferior to the Class 214. When the Western Railway from Vienna to Salzburg was fully electrified in 1952, the locomotives, by then designated as Class 12, lost their home line, and ten years later they were retired. The new Märklin Class 12.11 steam locomotive now brings this icon of European locomotive engineering to the fascinating world of model railways in miniature.
