But SMIC found another route. Instead of relying on a single exposure from an EUV machine, engineers can use older DUV equipment to repeatedly print and etch the same layers. The process is slower, more complicated and significantly more expensive, but it has allowed China to push beyond the limits many expected. That doesn't mean China has caught TSMC. TSMC's 2nm technology remains substantially more advanced, and its manufacturing yields, efficiency and scale are still major advantages. But the important change is that China's semiconductor industry has demonstrated that the EUV barrier isn't an absolute stop sign. And now that knowledge is spreading. Hua Hong is reportedly preparing to produce 7nm-class chips at its Shanghai Fab 6, potentially giving China a second major manufacturing base capable of producing advanced processors. Huawei is also reportedly working with additional Chinese suppliers and factories to expand the technology ecosystem. That could have major consequences beyond smartphones. The same manufacturing techniques being developed for Huawei's Kirin processors can also support China's growing AI chip industry, including Huawei's Ascend accelerators designed to compete with restricted Nvidia hardware. The semiconductor battle is therefore becoming a race not only to build better chips, but to build an entire chipmaking ecosystem that doesn't depend on foreign equipment. TSMC still has a substantial lead. ASML still controls the world's most advanced EUV lithography technology. And China's ability to manufacture advanced chips at high yields and massive scale remains an open question. But the direction of travel is becoming harder to ignore. China was supposed to be stuck.
