I remember well seeing the sign for Smokey's shop, every day, on my way to work in high school. I even remember, as a young child, seeing the remains of the old Daytona Speedway on the beach. Smokey was a household name in Daytona back in the 60s and early 70s, even if you weren't into racing.

Smokey was not the only one working in the gray area. Every team that was winning was doing the same. Smokey just talked back to NASCAR. Making NASCAR look dumb. While Lee Petty, Jr. Johnson, Holman & Moody Cotton Owens, Bud Moore, and others. Got along with Bill France. The problem was Bill France hated Curtis Turner and Smokey.

This has A Lot more to it than a polished intake.<br>We are talking about a flat head six compared to more current V-8 engines. Back then, huge increases in power were realized every year. New engines came to market annually.<br>There's a lot more to this story.
