Google still pays apple billions per year to be the default search engine in safari. Perfect example of winning the Ai race without using any Ai, just be the gatekeeper it flows through. You could also argue quite convincingly that the copper industry is winning due to being the critical metal in the datacenter.

Accidentally? They publicly released an entire report on the AI problem when all this started

I agree, regulations/bans is pretty much the only thing that can save the big ai models. That is why they have pushed so hard on regulations.

Apple was never in the frontier model race. They did not need to be in it. AI will be a commodity product in a few years and Apple will be the delivery system that model providers will need to deliver their personal AI solutions.

Mostservers run inside of Linux, and Apples runs inside of a BSD server...Both free an open source

A fun narrative with the “accidental” theme. It completely ignores Apples DNA. Apple is founded on the opposition to IBM mainframes. Not an accident, an identity.

The possibility of an AI company getting power over Apple is better compared to Google Maps and Apple creating its own version of maps over several years, but based on the Google template. By the time an AI firm would be in a position to leverage against Apple, Apple will be able to build its own system, even if it has to use the banned Chinese robot as a starting point.

Finally, the transition of Apples CEO is exactly in line with the strategy they are executing. The new CEO is a hardware guy. Not a systems guy. Not a software guy. Apple is betting on local AI, not just for lightweight, in your pocket usage, but also for every business that can’t use an AI that is outside of local control. Law firms are the perfect example. A law firm has to use AI that is local and not cloud based. Many businesses are wary of giving all of their information to a Google AI. That’s where an Apple AI that runs locally fits perfectly. The “light” AI is a preference and a necessity for many businesses.

The Siri flop was real. The pivot to on-device AI is completely in Apples DNA as much as building data centers is in Googles DNA.
