  I lived in the South Bronx in 82. I was 10 years old and used to play in those abandoned lots and buildings. We used to hang old tires from fire escapes and swing on them, and pile up two or three old mattresses we found and bounce on them like trampolines. Hearing gunshots was very common and weirdly enough I also recall hearing roosters in the morning. I’m 53 now and my parents still live in there, they don’t want to leave.

  I&apos;m from highbridge. Mrs. Blassingame was my 3rd grade teacher at CES 126 in highbridge. Its bitter sweet seeing her here and just learning of her contributions but not having the presence of mind to appreciate her while i had her wisdom within reach when i was younger. I&apos;ve hung out in that very building Mrs.blassingame helped keep alive. I started my videography career in front of that building with a few other dreamers raised in the south bronx.

  I was born in 1974, the South Bronx (Mott Haven) is weird to see this, I didn’t realize how bad things were. &nbsp;We walked to school past abandoned buildings and were not afraid. Times were simple and there was a sense of community despite the hardship. Made me resilient and proud to have survived the odds.

  As a little boy i thought this was normal. Im 56🇵🇷 born and raised in the bronx it was a great experience for me we went from shelters to a 3 bedroom mom dad 3 sisters i had my own room , loved the block where i grew up the entire 6 story building treated each other like family and it was intact . Summers and winters &nbsp;we played kick the can ,skelzies, handball, paddle ball ,hoops,sponge ball ,spin the bottle ,etc. There were a couple of 80% abandoned buildings across the street from ours we called them the crackhead buildings. I miss my teenage years they were exactly like this but we lived with what we were dealt and made the best of it ,IM still here LIVING in the BRONX❤️💯

  In 1980, my sixth grade class from Brooklyn took a trip to the Bronx Zoo. We took the elevated train that went through the South Bronx. We were all in shock, looking at the hundreds of abandoned buildings and empty lots. We also counted 6 buildings on fire. I&apos;m surprised to read that the South Bronx has made a comeback after that

  I was a 6th grader in 1964-65 PS66. &nbsp;Mostly Puerto Rican &nbsp;a few Blacks and a couple white Irish kids. &nbsp;Fortunately Mr. Morgan my teacher who I didn’t like, probably gave me the best education of my life.

  What a lot of people who didn&apos;t grow up in that environment don&apos;t understand is that there was still community amongst the residents. I didn&apos;t grow up in the Bronx, I grew up in Brooklyn, but I&apos;m the same age as that first little girl. My neighborhood was relatively &quot;nice&quot; by comparison but not by much. My projects were rough but we had Fort Greene Park right across the street. Back then East New York, and Brownsville looked identical to the Bronx with abandoned buildings, and empty lots. But it was home, and you cared about the people in your community. No matter how bad it looks on the outside the Bronx was still home to amazing people.

  Born and raised in the south bronx. I lived through all this poverty and crime. But honestly never felt like I didn’t have anything. My family always made it work.
