He's 100% right about Afrikaans. If an Afrikaans speaker and Dutch speaker would interact, 95% would be totally understood instantly (for the Dutch person at least) even if they had different words for things, because of context and the way Afrikaans speakers have this marvelous way of logically describing things. Like in the Netherlands we call a matchstick a "lucifer" (there is probably some great etymological story behind this), but in Afrikaans it's a "vuurhoutje", literally a "fire stick". A dutch person would pick up on this immediately and probably think "why don't we use this word?"

The Dutch seat of power in Taiwan was called Fort Zeelandia, after Zeeland. So the home of the Austronesian speaking peoples and the last major landmass discovered by the Austronesian speaking peoples were both given names after Zeeland.

The French numbers from 70 to 99 are part of their Celtic roots. There are a few surviving Celtic languages where counting like this is still an option.

The reason non-Dutch people struggle with our 'g' sound is actually because of the misconception that it is a throat sound. Just have your tongue in the same place as the English 'g', but push air through. That’s it. You don’t need to damage your throat.

It's in-between here in Belgium, still quatre-vingt for 80, but nonante instead of quatre-vingt-dix (and septante instead of soixante-dix).

As for New York btw, it was first called New Amsterdam, the Dutch again, but in fact the Belgians as well, as Manhattan had been bought by a Belgian (but from the french part this time, Tournai, which is my city, and also happened to have been the first capital of the franks)

People on the internet always say that the v makes an f sound and the w a v sound but like no? (well yes, it depens on the region a bit, but in most cases no? - yes the w sound is not the english w sound, but it's not an english v sound, nor is the v sound an english f sound that often - like there it depends on the word)

A fun fact.: the harsh G is actually a new invention and it used to be all a soft G. The harsh G was for the letter combination Ch like in Chloor and lachen and the soft g was for the normal g in gloria en lagen. So if you struggle with the spelling if it’s a g or ch just remember why you struggle with it now as it used to be able to be hear the difference

My parents are Frisian (Dutch) and German, but I grew up in southern africa and went to a church of mainly afrikaans speaking south africans. My grandparents who speak dutch would visit every few years and when we were at church they could communicate well with the afrikaners if both spoke slowly and used synonyms of words that weren't being understood the first time. Conversations went maybe at 40% the normal pace but they never needed anyone to translate in those conversations. Or at least my grandfather didnt. My grandmother was less interested in putting that much effort into it but my grandfather loved it.
