In response to what you said at around 1:18, cassette companies were not behind the production of audio equipment.

HEY GERALDINE, I did buy my first SONY WALKMAN, 1979, no radio, just cassette, $200 but LOVED IT !!! After several cassettes , went to the SONY MINIDISC WALKMAN, still using it.

Ahhhhh, the good old days (or not). Back in my teens I could only dream of a Walkman. I did get a Panasonic handheld recorder as a gift when I was about 11. It was only mono, to listen in stereo was the pinnacle of luxury for me. But it did record and I always had it with me. I´ve got tons of tapes with piano improvisations, jam sessions, parties, nature sounds and whatnot. It was solid as a brick and survived tons of abuse, but melted down when I forgot it on the car dashboard on a very very hot summer´s day. The great appeal with these machines, apart from their nostalgia value, is that they are so goddam easy to use. Press the recording button and you´re off. Finish recording, hit stop and that´s it. Even with a simple app, I have to open up the app menu, open the recorder, start recording, give the file a name and store it, and when I want to retreive the recording I have to go over to the computer, hook up the phone, finding my way through the snarly folder trees until I find the right one. My next studio gear investment might very well be some cheap old-school sampler from the same era (most likely a Casio SK-1) and I am thinking of getting something like this just for the fun of capturing sounds on the go. Brand new cassettes were available last time I looked.

Now this brings back memories lol. I actually am old enough to have bought the original Walkman brand new, and I was indeed hugely impressed by the sound quality. In recent years I've learned that it didn't just drop out of the mind of the engineers, but was the result of a long line of portable players which were geared mainly towards reporters. You can see them pointing towards politicians and public figures in news reports from the 70s and 80s. To some extent the mindset of the industry was still that cassettes were best suited for dictation and less for entertainment, but by the late 70s that was much less the case, and so Sony added another channel to their portable recorder, took out the recording function and voila!

My personal view of the whole phenomenon was one of wonder, and of envy haha. Pretty soon the size of the recorders shrank drastically, and if you had some serious money you could afford those cassette-sized players. There were some very slick models, as you've shown in your amazing collection.

Culturally, the phenomenon of the personal music player could be seen as the first major shift in social interactions that would become so much greater in the Age of Internet. For once you could walk around in public and tune out everything, and avoid social interaction if you wanted.
