  Hello. I'm commenting from Japan. The Tanashin copy mechanism currently used in most cassette players has problems with the motor and flywheel, as well as issues with insufficient rigidity and tape transport inaccuracies due to the way the capstan is fixed. For this reason, in Japan, enthusiasts sell reinforcement and adjustment parts for the mechanism, and players that incorporate these parts have significantly improved sound quality. Try searching for STC-W10C, STC-CR10SX, STC-CR10WX, and STC-WM10LX.

  Some of these comments are having a good time yucking it up, but truthfully, this is some really, really great research and I applaud you for your efforts. This is amongst the most niche aspects of home audio tech specs I’ve ever seen covered and the fact that anyone even bothered to put something like this together just tickles me pink

  I believe the whole &quot;shaking the Walkman to see if it&apos;s good&quot; thing could possibly be from people misremembering doing this to test portable CD players.<br><br>In those, a good anti skip buffer was a quite big selling point.

  The reason why the mechanisms are often listed as “movement” is because of a lazy translation. It’s meant to translate to “transport”, as in, tape transport.
