“Consume media that challenges your ideologies …” lights turn down and camera zooms in “…so you can crush your enemies and see them driven before you”

I am torn between commenting quickly or commenting when I'm not half-asleep, but I am totally on board for Daniel's philosophy hyperfixation.

What fascinates me is how we're starting to understand how memory works. Our memory, in the long term, is governed by narratives. We take our experiences as they happen and 'encode' them into a story that's based on what we went through, but...isn't exactly the same. We remember the narrative of what happened, not the exact event.

And because our memories in some manner constitute the substrate of what our sense of self is based on, it's not inaccurate to say that human beings ARE stories. Stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves. And because of that, the story is the fundamental unit of consciousness; the means by which we 'measure' what does or doesn't happen. On a deep level, our brains don't distinguish between something imaginary and something real...that processing happens MUCH later on, way up at the wrinkly bits at the top of the brain. Deep down, where the lizards sleep at the base of our brains, myths and legends and fiction echo against the ongoing story of ourselves, and the feelings that strike off those impacts like sparks ignite real feelings, and reshape us.

We are stories.

Storytelling is fundamentally a part of the human experience, and oh my am I happy that it is. Without it, the world around us would be a little less colourful, and a lot more bleak
