It’s not about blame. It’s about history. We didn’t cause it, we couldn’t stop it, we were part of it.

He sang this when he was 40 yrs old and it covers the timeframe and zeitgeist of the world in his life to that point.

Thalidomide was given to pregnant women to treat morning sickness. So much heartache for taking something that was approved and told was safe.

All the things he mentions were actual headlines from the news. All of them from his lifetime, just giving you reference.

When this came out my history teacher used it as a lesson plan. We went through every reference and why it mattered and what happened. Everyone was engaged best history lesson ever.

Billy does not actually mention Norman Rockwell in the song, it is the Rockefeller, whether that be Winthrop Rockefeller, Nelson Rockefeller or John D. Rockefeller III.

If I understand correctly Billy Joel is a big history nerd and got tired of hearing young people complain about nothing was their fault they just inherited the problems. So he wrote a song listing all the major events in the history of the US during his lifetime. There are some people who are trying to talk him into a part two. Check out “Keeping The Faith “.

There is an updated version of "We Didn't Start the Fire" which was released by the band Fall Out Boy in June 2023, with new lyrics covering historical and cultural events from 1989 to 2023. The song features new references like Arab Spring, George Floyd, and Meghan Markle, and modifies the original chorus to a more hopeful "No, we didn't light it / But we're trying to fight it"
