  There is no CGI used in this movie. None. To think this was made in the 1960s is unbelievable.

  Saw it in 1969 at my local theater as it was closed for renovations in 1968.  I was 11.  The film changed my concept of films.  I realized that films weren't just entertainment but could be art with a deeper meaning too.  Giant screen.  This movie needs to be seen on a huge screen if possible.

  About the music: all of it in this film is preexisting classical music. Kubrick originally intended to have an original score composed for 2001. He just used this classical music as placeholder music during production. But it fit so well, and he was such a big and knowledgeable classical music fan, he decided to keep it. The uneasy music that recurs throughout the film is actually several pieces by Györgi Ligeti, one of the great modern classical composers of the twentieth century. These are portions of his "Lux Aeterna" and his "Requiem", plus the entirety of his "Atmosphères" in the psychedelic 'stargate' sequence. There's also a somewhat altered section of his "Aventures" in the strange white hotel room sequence near the end. Ligeti's music also serves as the overture at the very beginning of the movie with the black screen. It's intended to set the stage and the mood, as does an overture at the beginning of an opera. Incidentally, although Ligeti's music might sound random, it's not. Every note is deliberately chosen and carefully notated. I know from painful firsthand experience how incredibly difficult his music is to perform. After the overture is the famous, powerful, majestic theme that begins and ends the movie proper. We also hear it when the ape first discovers how to use a bone as a tool/weapon. This is the opening of Richard Strauss's 1896 masterpiece "Also Sprach Zarathustra". Strauss based his piece on Nietzsche's book of the same name. The title is usually translated into English as "Thus Spake Zarathustra". (By the way, the part we hear is just the opening of the piece. The entirety of Strauss's "Zarathustra" is both profound and thrilling. It's about 30 minutes long, and well worth getting to know.) Immediately after the apes section -- when we first see spaceships gliding through space -- we hear the elegant "Blue Danube Waltz" by Johann Strauss II (no relation to Richard Strauss). This was also used for the closing credits. And there's a brief excerpt from Aram Khachaturian's "Gayne" ballet (the slow, somber music when we first see the long spaceship Discovery on its way to Jupiter, and when we see Frank jogging around the perimeter of the ship).

  The Tycho Magnetic Anomaly (TMA1) was a sentinel. Set to notify its creator of a species advance. The dawn of man one was a teacher, the one out by Jupiter was a gate.<br>We used to show this as a midnight movie in the early &apos;70s. The front rows were always full of stoners waiting for the trippy part.

  Peter Hyams the director of 2010: The Year We Make Contact was respectful enough to approach Stanley to ask if he would approve of him making a sequel even though Kubrick held no rights to do so - he just wanted his OK. To his credit, Kubrick was supportive and even offered Hyams the advice to go make the movie he wanted to and to not try and compete with 2001. I&apos;d encourage you to seek it out and judge it for yourself.

  Honestly, you’ve not really seen this film until you’ve sat through a 70mm print screening in a cinema with full surround sound. Totally immersive.

  Thirty-plus years ago I worked on a theatre production with Keir Dullea, the actor who plays Dave. &nbsp;He had some great stories about making the film.
