I had a wonderful gift from my late mother with regards to premium bonds. She passed away in 2023, and in the months following, her entries won over 5k in prizes (the premium bonds still remain in the deceased persons name and eligible for prizes until probate is sorted). Thanks Mum wherever you are! xx

£25 is the minimum buy, but each premium bond is £1.

We have held the max of £50k each for just over 2 years (having maxed out ISAs, rainy day fund etc). We are in our 70s and are no longer interested in market investments.
In 23/24 we earned 3.6% and in 24/25 4.7%

As the video concludes, the number one reason for having PBs is if you've maxed everything out (ISA & pension) then they make sense in terms of saving tax. They also make sense as a place to park an emergency fund or reserve cash buffer, again if you'd get taxed on the savings if they were in a bank or similar. Other than those two reasons, they are a punt. Park £100 in there instead of the lottery if you want to scratch an itch & maybe one day, it could be you 🤞

Thank you to you both. Wonderful video. Easy to understand. Many thanks to both of you. Billy

The minimum you can buy is £25 worth - but that is 25 bonds (or chances to win) NOT 1 bond which cost £25.

What I don't like is that when you first purchase premium bonds you have to be invested for over 1 month or so before your numbers are entered into the draw. So if I bought some today, 15 June 2026, I won't be entered into the draw until August 2026.

There are better options out there instead of PBs if you haven't maxed out your ISA allowance and your tax-free savings allowance.
Once you have maxed out those, then PBs become more appropriate against the post-tax savings rates of other savings methods.
Especially if you have a large amount of cash to increase the chances of winning.
Rule of thumb ~5k to be more often than not winning each month and ~20k to expect to win something each month on average.

The conclusion I got from this video is that Premium Bonds and the machine that draws them are soft and cuddly.

Please could you do an episode on Premium Bonds, much older people and Inheritance Tax. If an elderly person won big on the Bonds, although non-taxed on receipt, I presume that would be included in inheritance tax figures for 7 years after death? So should older people consider moving Premium Bonds into ISAs? Or are ISAs also included in IHT sums?
