We are told to spread “risk”.
Do the same in retirement.

If you have enough money...retirement is always a good idea

Retire as soon as you can, as you can't control what happens in the future. The only thing you can control is what you do every day and have a action plan for anything that comes your way.

Life is short so live it.

Surly Sequencing risk (which is what this really is about) is only a really significant risk if you are wholly dependant on an annuity for your retirement and take 100% of the pot to buy that annuity at a "worst time". Today in the UK flexible drawdown means you can moderate your withdrawal in the bad times and allow your pot time to recover. ISA's and cash savings help in these instances.

Using an annuity for some pension income pre State Retirement Age, with a Guaranteed Minimum Future Value is a 'hedge' I am looking at regarding a downturn in my pension pot immediate post retirement, as opposed to de-risking the portfolio per se. Thinking 20/25% of pot into a 10-year annuity and keep the rest in a reasonably risky portfolio for drawdown. Surprised there isn't more comment on mixing methods of drawdown, as opposed to 'annuity' vs 'drawdown'. Good video this, but as with most videos on this topic, there is never any discussion about savings held, downsizing, inheritance etc. The 'pension' is not going to equal 'retirement income' for most (fortunate) people.

I’m 61 and will get my State Pension in six years. I already have a DB pension, so for now I’ll take only modest SIPP drawdown to stay within basic-rate tax, move surplus cash into ISAs, and use cash savings to top up my spending. Later on, I expect to use around 25% of my SIPP to buy an annuity for extra guaranteed income, and if markets are weak I’ll simply spend less and reduce SIPP withdrawals to manage sequencing risk.

Be interesting to consider the sequencing risk v not using the personal allowance by relying on savings in a correction. (No state pension for 6 years and savings in ISAs).

If you waited for the "perfect" time to retire, you never would!
I crunched the numbers 2 years ago and realized I could afford to retire early, so I did. I'm happy drawing down from my with my SIPP, with 60% equities + 40% fixed income / gold / cash allocation, which allows me to sleep at night but also gives reasonable growth (15% pa since I retired). If / when we get a market correction, I'll rebalance back to 60% equities (aka "buy the dip").
