Just an FYI, Sam Haft does a lot of interviews with YouTubers if you ever wanted to talk to him about the writing process. I love these vocal analyses!

Jessica's performance is stunning all by itself, but I also think the song wouldn't be the same without Alex's menacing vocals. You had a chuckle about the "yeah"s but I love the way they help build up the ominous vibe before the diving into the thick of things with the chorus. Alex was supposed to be at the Broadway show and couldn't make it, I'll forever be sad we didn't get to see them on stage performing this together!

It’s worth noting that Sam Haft has said they originally intended to record the song a step or half-step down, because they thought the original key would be too high. But during the recording session, they realized she was doing it in the original key and since she was nailing it, they kept it that way

When you said "It's a little like Imagine Dragons" my brain instantly thought "Oh, so like Consider Lizards." and I both love and hate that xD

Sad to hear people were so critical of the live performance - I think... it's kind of easy to lose sight, as you said, of the difference between live and studio recorded music. Especially for those not super familiar with live shows.

There is also a video of her in studio where you can see her mouth movements that might be worth a look at.
