Disregard for safety standards during the Soviet era was at least somewhat mitigated by mandatory investigation in case of an incident, usually followed by some form of disciplinary action against the unit's CO. In post-Soviet years corruption, low morale and chronic underfunding made things much worse.

Very cool to hear about Soviet conscript experiences in English that isn’t just “har har dumb russian commies”.

The photos also are very enjoyable, played this video as background audio but found myself watching the whole thing properly

Posting this in the middle of the night is diabolical, because now I'm going to be late going to bed, and it's all your fault.

"Better rations? Warm beds? Less sleep deprivation? Better training and equipment? Nonsense, just haze them till they want to die." - Probably every military ever

As a Combination K conscript, I am also being forced to watch this overnight and miss out on sleep.

It's nice to see that launching helmets into the sky with explosives is a vastly more universal experience than I thought

As a former USMC and US Army Infantryman I can relate to great many of these stories! It's good to know that things are messed up in every military and that our suffering was shared.

Having served in the US Navy, many of these stories have a familiar tone, after all, all militaries deal with similar constraints and pressures.

watching this after "The Marine Corps Is Stupid & Spiritually Depraved | PART 2" is kinda strange

finally an english source on everyday life in the soviet army. the culture of the russian army during the chechen wars overshadows the ussr and leads to a warped perception of the hazing culture that is incorrectly attributed to the soviet forces. i am happy to finally have clarity on this, thank you

My dad served in the polish army as a radio man during the 60s and a lot of the stories you repeated here lined up with his experience also he made it sound common for soldiers/drivers to trade gasoline with locals in exchange for food and beverages
my favorite story of his was when he was tasked with his squad members to repaint some part of a roof or chimney and they ended up catching crows (or something similar) and painting them (some stripes some pokodots) they eventually got caught by their sergeant but he thought it was so funny that he did not punish them he just asked them to stop it before some one higher up figured out it was them

That combined arms edit you did was fantastic that could be posted on its own same with the general chewing out the commander and his unit
