Talking to a man from Kenya I see once a month, we discussed the post colonial system and he explained it this way: "The colonial powers only saw black and white, not tribal or cultural identity. Unfortunately, we went through getting our national identity and reverted back to now we only see in tribal identity, and its one of the things that makes the corruption nearly unstoppable. Every strong man has a built in captive power base and they're scared to hand that power off to someone else who isnt of their tribe, even if the current strong man is awful to everyone." Very insightful imo.

One of the most hilarious, and very obscure, pieces of Rhodesia lore is that in 1963-64, as the threat of Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence was looming, the British government for a time seriously considered smuggling the Queen Mother, who was particularly popular in Rhodesia, into the country. The plan was for her to then personally rally support for the British government and remove Smith from power to avoid UDI. Safe to say, the government shelved that particular idea on account of it being absolutely bonkers

Once again, eminently grateful that my great grandfather decided to not emigrate to Rhodesia after he retired from the British Army in '45. The story goes that several of his peers tried to talk him into retiring there as they were, because of the climate (My great grandfather was actually born in India and had no intention of retiring to somewhere as dismal as England). He could see the potential of coming political instability as the British Empire 'retracted' so instead he moved to Canada where my great grandmother's family had ties.

See the French forces here are one of those groups where you really do wonder what the hell they did that made the Rhodesia's go "Yeah thats too far", but at the same time you really don't want to know because you want to hold on to your food from the last 12 hours.
