There was a mini series called the Odyssey from 1997. 3 hrs long it was way closer to Homer's poem the this.

It´s more about symbolism and how it relates with the modern world than recreating the literature.

In Dunkirk, they do have "map scene" though. It comes from the falling flyers from the sky at the beginning, showing the enemy almost surrounding them. Film is visual storytelling, not necessarily dialogue to explicit lead the audience down the primrose path.

I totally agree. Its a phenomenal movie that tells a great story, but it’s not the same story as The Odyssey

On Dish which is an English podcast that can also be found on YouTube Tom Holland as a guest described the camera used for filming. He said it was incredibly large and often the camera was about 5 to 8 feet from their faces at times. It's a special IMAX camera i believe. That might explain the use of so many closeups.
