The first time I found this story was in 1976 and I was in the US Army and I was flying back from Germany to the United States and had a layover in Heathrow Airport. A young lonely servicemen far from home and I was desperate for something to read. A very kind English gentleman gave me a paperback about the SAS and this story was in it and I was amazed. Thank you for the excellent work and a very big thank you to that gentleman for the book, from a American Servicemen who needed a book and a friend long ago.

Thank you for this one Chris. There is no doubt that Sergeant Labalaba should have been awarded the VC for his actions, and I know there is pressure being applied to rectify this omission. While the political and military circumstances might have prevented its issue, that can be addressed now. Two of the nine SAS men were Fijian, a high percentage, but indicative of the Fijians, Tongans and Samoans that have fought in all branches of the British military but especially special forces units.

I served with a couple of Talaiasi Labalaba's relatives (one of which later went on to serve in The Regiment) Two top young guys who were great soldiers carrying on their families military tradition.

The Mirbat Gun is held in the RA collection at Larkhill, they have about 4/5 open days a year with visits to the collection. During the Dofar campaign against the Adu we managed to break down a 25 Pdr and move it up to the mountain in camel loads resemble and use it to give the insurgents a bit of a shock as they assumed that no artillery would be available.

I served in Dhofar during the 1980s and was able to discuss the battle with one of the adoo soldiers who was present that night. He explained that the plan was to take the town at night, loot it and be gone by dawn for fear of the Strikemasters from Salalah. However they became lost due to thick monsoon mist. The adoo commander decided to scrub the mission. But as they returned to their jebel stronghold they heard the Baluchi soldiers brewing up as dawn began to break. Knowing now where they were the adoo commander made the faithful decision to press home the attack, rather than scrub the plan and return the following night. With the first light of day starting to illuminate the open plain north of the town, this proved a costly mistake.

I worked and lived in the Sultanate of Oman for seven years and thought it was a wonderful and interesting country with great people. This Battle of Mirbat in 1972, along with most of the military engagements of the 1970s, was shrouded in secrecy whilst I was there and one was not allowed to visit certain mountainous areas that were still considered possible hotbeds of discontent, unless you had a permit ! Troops manned the entry points! One hill in the centre of the Country cost the Omanis one soldier for every metre secured on the way up: one thousand men to take a one thousand metre "hill" (or so I was informed by a British Army guy who was there at the time!). Chris, you might consider the Battles of the "Jebel Shams and Akhdar" also for a future video. Please !! You did Mirbat proud. Labalaba should get hisV.C. !
