Wisdom teeth are not necessarily “spares” in the same sense we think about today, you could argue that, but more properly they are evolutionary vestiges from relatives that had bigger jaws and different diets.

Fun fact about me: I still have all my organs -- wisdom teeth, gallbladder, appendix, tonsils, everything, except 1 molar that got a bad cavity.
