Not being warned about this movie in advance is a gift, not a curse

For almost 30 years now, the unspoken rule about this movie is you DO NOT talk about the ending. It’s the Fight Club of movies.

I think this is the best supernatural movie ever. It transcends the genre by deemphasizing the usual tropes and gore to deliver a deeper meaning. My favorite scene is when Cole tells his mother, a moment of overwhelming emotional power.

And fyi the doctor after the closet incident is the real director. He loves making cameos in his own movies

Crying is a completely natural and normal thing. It is a testament to a person’s character, because it reveals their best quality: compassion.

People watching reactions to things aren't seeing the content for the first time, and they aren't interested in fake superficial reactions; Ergo - when you cry - it let's us know the film has had the potent emotional impact that we felt when watching it, and hoped you would as well, which is of course why we all come here to begin with, to celebrate great art by watching others discover it for the first time.

Love this movie..for a couple years I lived VERY close to the spot where Malcolm was sitting on the bench reading Cole's paperwork.  One little hint that very few catch is Cole's last name Sear..which sounds like Seer.  Someone who sees...ghosts apparently.  You mentioned her holding his wedding ring at the end which makes the scene with Anna selling the engagement ring in her shop more profound.  She mentions how she believes that a person imprints a part of themselves into their jewelry.  She would hold his ring and watch their wedding video to try to keep him close.  And of course it was written masterfully so that it almost sounds like she is confessing having feelings for someone else "wanting someone you can't have" but obviously, after the reveal, she couldn't have her husband any longer.   Watching this movie again is amazing; you now know why Cole was running from Malcolm and into the church in the beginning.  You know why Cole stood outside the school hesitating to go in due to how scary it was for him.  Malcolm kept opening the basement door so she locked it but then he was unlocking it so she put the desk in front of it and then he couldn't open it because he wouldn't see it there until he realized he was dead and he would start seeing things for how they really were.   Some people wondered about when her employee left the house and questioned why he seemed to not notice Malcolm however... It appears as if the taillights of his car are off so his headlights are still off (do not see those either) and he pulls out fairly quickly so when i saw it the first time I believed he had noticed Malcolm there and got the hell out of there.  The color red is always important in this film.  M. Night made sure anything red was removed from scenes except for what he planted.  And he gave special instructions to help sell the belief that he was noticed like when they are at the restaurant.  Right before she says "Happy Anniversary" M. Night made the table behind Bruce start laughing loudly which draw's Anna's attention so her eyes go up but it looks like she glanced at Malcolm before basically dismissing him.  She also said it in a sorrowful tone to make it seem like she was angry with him for missing their Anniversary dinner but really she was lamenting the fact that she was celebrating it alone.  It was a ton of special touches but it was very important so that we did not feel 'cheated' after the reveal.  Many movies that try twists can leave the viewer being cheated because of the way that everything was set up.  But I never, ever felt cheated by this.  Deceived?  Of course but only because of how our minds perceived things initially.  Masterfully written and directed.  Masterfully acted by everyone.
