"Everything will be different in the morning." She can't move on because he has been haunting her, not letting go. Once he realizes he's dead, he can move on, and her grieving can progress and resolve.

Knowing that Bruce Willis’s character was an award-winning child psychologist known for helping countless children…. why were you so against the idea of him helping Cole? He clearly needed help.

I think Cole knew Malcolm was dead from the very start. That's why he was running away from him, he knew Malcolm was a ghost. And when Cole left the church, he asked Malcolm, "I'm going to see you again, right?" I think, at that point, he was still afraid of Malcolm, so he really didn't want to see him again, but he suspected he would see him repeatedly anyway.
The thing that tells me the puppy wasn't a ghost, was because the puppy was running from that 70s kid who had a hole in the back of his head (if the puppy had been a ghost, he wouldn't be able to see other ghosts), and also, when seeing that 70s kid causes Cole to ask his Mom if he can sleep in her bed, she was in the process of coaxing the frightened puppy from its hiding place. If the puppy had been a ghost, his mother wouldn't be able to see it and react to it.

She put the bookcase in front of the door because Malcolm's ghost kept going in the basement & she heard strange noises. So she blocked it. Also, she is unable to move on bc Malcolm has been haunting her (unknowingly). He says that things will be different in the morning bc his spirit will no longer be around & she will be able to move on.

01:23:00 Munchausen syndrome by proxy is a mental illness where a caregiver, often a mother, fabricates or induces illness in a person under their care, typically a child.

Good reaction. The reason she was still grieving is because his presence was always around. Once his spirit moves on....realizing he's actually dead...she can move on. And yes the clothes he was wearing including the raincoat he was wearing the day he died.

Some trivia: playing Vincent Grey, the man who broke in and shot Malcolm at the start of the film, is famous actor Donnie Wahlburg. He totally transformed himself physically and mentally to prepare for the part. And the doctor examining Cole after he was locked in the closet is the film's director, M. Night Shyamalan. As the screenwriter, he came up with probably the most epic plot twist in this film.

I love how, at the very end, after Malcolm finally says all he needs to say to Anna, the screen goes to white, indicating that he has finally passed over. And he does it with a smile on his face, knowing that they can all now move on. Then it cuts to the wedding video, showing that he was loved and will never be forgotten ...
