Donny was brilliant in this. He lost a load of weight to play that part, I remember him in his musical days

Even though Walberg was in the movie less than 2 minutes, he dropped something like 30-40 lbs for the role.

The first time you watch this, you see Malcolm's story.
The second time, you see Cole's.

The day Tommy walks Cole to school, as Cole stands outside the school building, you can see in brick an earlier name of the school, formerly a Catholic educational facility named after St Anthony of Padua who is the patron saint of lost things, including lost people and lost faith, a theme common to Cole, his family, Malcolm and his family, and even Vincent Grey.

M Night Shyamalan used the color red as a code for any supernatural contact. He was quite fastidious about it, removing the red on props, costume, and set that had nothing to do with ghosts and adding it to anything having to do with ghosts. If you see the red, look for ghostly involvement.
-The Jesus figure Cole steals from the church has a red drape.
-Cole's sanctuary tent is red chintz.
-The sweater he wore in his encounter with the stairway ghost is red. Notice the stairway carpet is also red and a red balloon led him.
-The ink Cole used in his violent automatic writing, found by his mother while cleaning, is red.
-Cole's mother's nail polish, when she examined his baby photos, was red.
-The throw blanket Anna covers herself with to stay warm is red, and a lot of her clothing after the shooting is red. The clothing is a dark red, indicating aging, like an old wound.
-The doorknob he has to turn to enter the basement where he does his work, which Anna has barricaded with a console table, is red.
-Kyra's mother, at the funeral reception, is in bright red, indicating her involvement with Kyra's death and her gamble with the life of Kyra's little sister. The mother had Munchausen by proxy, a mental condition where the instigator keeps a vulnerable person sick, usually a child, so the instigator can receive praise and attention for their sacrifice in nursing the vulnerable person. In such cases, there is no incentive or intention to actually let the vulnerable one expire. If they die it's by error, so it's manslaughter instead of murder.
-And actually, the parade of kids in baseball uniforms that cross in front of Cole and Malcolm as they walk the street together... The kids have red on their uniforms and are wearing red baseball caps. This indicates all those kids are ghosts, probably having not survived a bus accident that happened in travel between their home field and an away game site.

Cole's baby photos all had a flash of light in them, sometimes multiple ones. Parapsychologists contend that this is energy registered on camera film that is emitted by ghosts and spirits. The term they use for this phenomenon is 'orb'.

Those who study this also contend that it is common for ghosts to create cold spots when they are present. The theory is that manifestation draws energy out of the immediate area, most often heat energy, and the loss or stilling of heat is what the living is perceiving. It has nothing to do with the emotional state of the spirit, only that it is attempting to make an appearance.

Another theory is that many ghosts pass carrying with them the evidence of the physical trauma that ended their lives. Those able to see ghosts can see the damage, but the ghosts seem to still be in shock, with denial shielding them from recognizing what has happened to them. Many arrive in the afterlife confused, unable to keep track of time, and creating excuses and explanations for the obstacles they encounter. Some get angry, especially if the death was unjust, or the anger is just due to frustration in not getting help or sympathy. The anger can make them violent or the violence may come from fear. There's understandably a lot of fear in finding yourself in the afterlife when you don't even realize you're dead. The denial isolates you by making you unable to see others, when the living ignore you, and when most of the few living who can see you are terrified.

I find it interesting that, when Malcolm hurries away from his wife's antique shop after breaking the window, he has his hand over his bullet wound, like it's aching. Anna has been in serious mourning for about a year, constantly replaying their wedding video, and has not been a second without thinking of him. But after a year self isolating, she is beginning to miss human contact, so she gives in to her employee's advances and almost kisses him. That drop in her attention forces Malcolm's denial to crack. It makes sense that he has to become aware of the trauma that took his life in order to begin to accept his own passage and begin processing it.

Philadelphia is a terrible place to be if you are a sensitive and do not want to encounter ghosts.
Philadelphia is the US's oldest continually inhabited city, older that the US. Its roots go back to the early 1600's and was the most populous city until 1790, when New York City took that title and has remained so ever since. Even the building Cole lives in was once a single family dwelling, but has since been carved into several apartments, meaning much inhabitant turnover.
Living in Philadelphia means Cole can't avoid encountering ghosts from different eras constantly. Already, he has met an abused wife from the Fifties and a young teen from the Seventies in his own home. Kyra is different. She went looking for his help, to save her sister.

And yes, Cole knew from the start about Malcolm. He wasn't asking in their first meeting in the church whether they would have more sessions in the future. Cole was asking if he, Cole, would be actually SEEING Malcolm after this meeting. He didn't know the next time would be in his own livingroom, sitting across from his oblivious mother...

Also, yes, Vincent was another sensitive, just like Cole, who was left in his fear and terror instead of guided to empathy and helping those stuck in their own afterlife confusion. What Vincent saw as a curse became to Cole a calling he embraced, due to Malcolm's eventual intervention.

Malcolm couldn't forgive himself for failing Vincent and Anna struggled with the fear that she was second fiddle to Malcolm's career. The unfinished business burdening him was those two things. He corrected his error with Vincent by helping Cole, and he corrected Anna's feelings of not being as central to Malcolm as he was to her. These were the two most important things he had to resolve before he could allow himself to move on. In other words, these were requirements he placed on himself, not some spiritual law of the afterlife.

Yay you figured it out before the end. I have watched a lot of reactions to this movie. Some people figure it out before its over and some its a complete shock. It’s kinda disappointing when they figure it out too fast. Some “get it” as soon as Cole says, “I see dead people” Most people know that line and some it still never clicked that Malcolm is dead and very few (that Ive seen) realize Malcom is dead from the beginning cause they know the line.

Great reaction. You're the second reactor I've watched that figured out the twist, but you actually figured it out about 15 minutes quicker on the edit I watched here. Good job!! I enjoy watching other reactors watch this movie to see their shock at the end when they realize that Malcom had died. I'll usually fast forward to the end for the reactions. Lots of dropped jaws! LOL I'm glad I didn't do that this time in your case. You really payed attention to the story. This is one of my all-time favorite movie. I actually saw it opening weekend with a friend back in '99. Neither of us figured it out. I don't think anyone in the audience did either. It 's hard to believe the movie is 27 years old now. It definitely holds up. Such a shame though to see where Bruce is today though with his illness. Life can be cruel. Take care.
