47 now and an atheist/humanist. In the height of my Christianity, in my 20's, I managed to stop self-gratification for months. But then I started having nocturnal emissions. I came to the realization that it was just a normal body function and that I would rather take care of it while awake than have to clean my sheets every day. The ridiculous things we do to try to please a being that doesn't even exist.

I am one of those “young Christian men” that rushed into marriage to avoid Sin. I got married at 19 (I’m 22 now) I can honestly say that you hit the nail right on the head. I’m in the process now of deconstructing everything, from my faith to my politics. But she still believes strongly (she’s what you might call a reformed fundamentalist. Believing in a young earth and that the Bible is inerrant . But that you shouldn’t discriminate against homosexuals and women ETC.) and it’s been tough man. She is still one of my closest friends and I don’t want to continue to hurt her, I’m just lost, I don’t know what to do. I realize now that we do have A LOT of different goals, desires and philosophies in life but I feel as though I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place. Our families are still very close and all of my friends are close with her as well and by leaving her I would effectively end my relationship with all parties involved. I don’t want to stay just to make our parents happy and I don’t want to hurt her by leaving. She thinks this is just “part of my testimony and God is going to use this one day” I just don’t have the heart to tell her “No, it’s probably not.” I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. This was very long winded but I just wanted to say thank you Brandon, I’ve been listening to you for quite a while now and you’ve been a tremendous help/comfort to me in my deconstruction journey. I genuinely look forward to your insight you share in your videos every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday (and the occasional Saturday short) if you haven’t done anything else with your channel, you’ve helped me and I’m very grateful for it. keep up the good work!

I know first-hand how this mentality messes with a person. Part of the reason I examined my faith and reasons for belief were because I was worried I was a "lukewarm Christian" and that I'd be spat out. I worried I was going to hell because I wasn't sure if I was saved or not. And I was worried I wasn't the "right" kind of Christian. And that opened the door to me examining why I believed to begin with or how I could know what is true... and long story short I realized I'm an atheist. But there was so much fear and so much self loathing up until realizing I no longer believe. I feel bad for how religion has hurt people and made them feel that they are wicked simply for being human. It is so messed up...<br>I'm thankful for people like you talking about these things. It helps me process them as a former Christian, and maybe... maybe it can help others work through these things, too.

Amusing about the cussing, the pastor of a church my dad attended admitted to watching porn. I asked if he was going to be removed and my dad said they were going to give him another chance, then he said something that floored me. He said 'it would be different if he had been caught cussing or something'

"its not a religion, its a relationship with christ" always seems like something a cult would teach their followers.

Such scary world we used to live in, with demons and pitfalls around every corner, all the time living with the threath that in the end you could still end up getting spit out.

I feel really bad for this guy and Christians like him. His life seems to be a nightmare. I don't know how he can endure it.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBcTtAQXhPI&t=840">14:00</a> this is what made me think Christianity is a walk into a comic book style life to lay over reality. The cognitive dissonance that slowly eroded away as I applied logic and critical thinking, not taking it literally, and getting therapy and applying what I needed in order to grow worked better than being "more religious". "God is good, you're bad. Try harder " doesn't work. My life feels so much better now that I don't believe.

"God is supposed to fill you with purpose." (Paraphrased) This is one of the reasons I became an atheist. I was suffering from a deep depression when I was much younger. I went to church with my family like a good Christian, and one day they asked for people to be baptized. I stood up, thinking, "I have to do something. Maybe God's light will burn away the depression."<br><br>I got baptized, and I was then wet and still deeply depressed. Of course, nothing changed except I started to think differently about my faith. It took me a long time to get the proper help, but by the time I did, my faith was completely dead.

Setting an unattainable standard of behaviour then condemning everything you do is classic abusive partner shit.
