Created to Be Hated: Why Seeing the World as Evil Hurts Us All

Before I was exposed to all these life-negating verses in the Bible as a child, I watched PBS shows like Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos,” and David Attenborough’s “The Living Planet.” Those two men made me appreciate what a wonderful universe we lived in and how fortunate we are to experience it. So when missionaries tried to club me over the head about views of the world as evil and wretched, I rejected them outright. To quote Louis Armstrong, “What a wonderful world!”

Add to the equation of "you were sinful before you were born" the fact that you didn't ask to be born in the first place and it makes it even more disgusting.

The irony of this kind of guilt - that we are supposedly all innately evil - is that the minority of humans who could be described as truly evil, won't care one bit. The guilt-tripping can only work by exploiting the doubts of decent people.

I've heard sooo many Christian "therapists" trying to reconcile these passages while at the same time telling you that you're a wonderful child of God and you have creativity and blah blah blah .. yeah, you're correct.. it's a mind-fùkc.

The first crack for me was when my SBC pastor's wife cradled my week-old son and pronounced him "fit for hell." That was 40-couple years ago with no Internet to consult, but I was shocked. It made me question just what I had signed on to. Sadly it took a while, with a lot of church-gypsying to find a different message to ultimately wrenching myself out of it altogether.

Thanks for pointing out the inertia about serious issues caused by the tomorrowism of this miserable religion.

Great video. It baffles me that the founder of this religion even goes so far as to tell his followers that they need to “hate” their parents, children, etc. or they are not worthy of being his disciples. He also says that marriage is for this life only and won’t exist in heaven - talk about discouraging a deep, loving connection with your partner and other loved ones. It’s insane.

God knew exactly what was going to happen when he sent the serpent to Adam and Eve. The only way that appears as a test is to us who do not have infinite foreknowledge. From a divine perspective that has perfect knowledge of the future and the perfect ability to change that future, and yet still sends the serpent, that is a form of entrapment.

This is so spot on. When I started doing the gruesome work of bettering my mental health, one fundamental issue I stumbled on, was how my sense of low self worth was tied to my evangelical Christian mindset. The more I let go of faith, the more I valued myself more😢

the terrible psychological and emotional damage caused by my childhood under christian teaching taught me what not to do as a parent. When my kids acted badly, I never told them they were bad, I always clearly said that action was not good and this is why... Any truly loving parent consciously works to build confidence, self-love, foundations for independence, altruism, community spirit and all that good stuff in their kids and it starts with letting them know they are capable and deserving of these things. God's blue print? What not to do as a parent.

I lean toward a pessimistic worldview. I see myself as fairly good and striving for virtue in myself, but the world doesn't seem like a great place. Especially for someone who loves nature, to constantly see it being destroyed is heartbreaking. I don't see humanity as bad, but I don't think they have the wisdom to have dominion without destroying it.

I loved the analogy of a shoemaker crafting a thousand pairs of shoes, and every single pair was defective. Likewise, the so-called creator of the universe made all of us defective (sinful/evil) and in need of a savior. What a scam. One of my Christian friends was "witnessing" to me, and I countered with "I was born just fine the first time, thank you very much."

This gaslighting is part of the offloading of all guilt and culpability onto humans. Pretty slick move really, as not only is this god then seemingly off the hook, the consequent fear and shame can keep people trapped for a long time. Once you see through these tricks, it's surprising that so many people still buy it or fall for it. But then I remember that I fell for it myself for decades. It's extremely liberating once the blinders finally come off and the cognitive dissonance gets resolved.
