Everyone who helped Ruby to work through and comprehend the stories of her family was so caring, kind and respectful. They were each remarkable.

Ruby has overcome a lot. She didn't have a normal childhood and didn't feel loved. Her sense of humor helps her, but she is truly a strong woman. I appreciate her openness about being on medication herself and wish her the very best.

She is in disbelief that her parents never talked about these painful events, and can't believe that they avoided all mention of them. But she also avoided even thinking about the possibilities that her parents' relatives died in horrible ways in the holocaust. It seems to come as a total shock to her. She has also avoided in a very similar way.

Trauma is so complicated, and causes pain and harm for generations.

Her Dad didn't tell her, because he was trying to protect her. Sometimes we parents do things with best intentions that backfire.

This Ruby is an extraordinarily courageous person to confront all these traumas in her family history and with the cameras rolling too. Her ancestors would be so proud

My parents escaped Vienna in the Fall of '38. Unlike you, I was given the story of their escape (thru Italy and then to wait in Panama). I was born on Ellis Island and took my grandchildren for a birthday celebration there when I was 80. I can relate to the feeling of agitation/anxiety that has followed me my whole life. The meds that helped me stay out of the asylums seemed to work. It would be a blessing to share with you the story I know.

Boy Ruby's parents relationship sounds just like my Hungarian grandparents! Erie, how similar! I too have every single family document and pictures. They are heartbreaking and beautiful to see and to have. My grandparents immigrated to NY in the mid 50s after spending 2 years in London waiting on their documents to be approved. My grandma and 3 little kids endured 9 concentration camps before landing in England. Both those bloodlines are mentally and emotionally a total mess. My mother was a lifetime nut. My uncle a drinker. My aunt zero sense of humor and very quiet unless nessisary she speak. I've lived through hell because of what they all went through in Europe and WW2 and the Holocaust. These events destroyed generations of families not just the 1st. I miss my family who are all in heaven. Life is not the same without them around. But the quiet, the less drama, is priceless.

This just destroyed me. The utter inhumanity. I can see perfectly why her poor Mother would’ve been disconnected from reality. How tragic that her pain caused her to lose Ruby too, and to not have love with her husband anymore, after all that. Terribly sad.

Her parents never wanted to talk about their past, it is natural to block it out.

“A place of rest for the agitated”. Yes, a much better way to explain it ❤

Her parents were in such denial that it would have been more traumatic to them to respond to real life at the time. More than likely, for the rest of their lives, they were so fearful of bringing the trauma back that they displayed anger when their personal history was questioned.

Several decades ago, I went to see Michael Moore in London, England. As a Canadian, I had no idea who Ruby was and sat next to her and chatted the whole night. She was hilarious and I am sure that she was surprised that everyone in the room knew who she was except for me. Anyway, she was lovely...
