Has anyone thought about retiring south of Hua Hin - It's quieter and cheaper and a lovely area to explore!

What you are showing is Pak Nam Pran, not Pran Buri. Pran Buri is a boring little town with only a small shopping mall. The place where you are drinking your latte is the restaurant Baan Pal, which is also not in Pran Buri but in Sam Roi Yot. At least, that’s what I know from the 14 years I’ve lived there. Baan Pal is the breakfast stop we visit twice a week on our short bicycle trips. I live in Pran Buri, just near the border of Hua Hin, the same as my two cycling companions.

When I moved here, there were not many foreigners, but unfortunately they are spreading south of Hua Hin. We used to live quietly here until a Swede bought a piece of land, out of all the land available, right next to our plot. A few months later, he sold it, and there is now an enormous building next to our nice, small house, where two nice people from South Africa live. They are good people, but I wish that house (also beautiful) were gone and we could live our peaceful life among the pineapple fields again. But alas, times change — we have to deal with it.

Rural woman in Maine use to being away from the crowd and really appreciate the 5 recommendations as someone who is seriously eyeing abroad. Quiet, unassuming, long term sobriety and in continual desire for peace and kindness I would hope to contribute where ever I land to the area and country

Very good comparison to other cities. Made it ultra clear and useful to help us decide where to move to. Keep it up. Please share other hidden gem cities on other Thailand coasts. Thanks again!

After I retired (at 53 - that's when you are retired from the military) I lived in Hua Him for 6 years. Owned a house there (The Heights). I was single (divorced) with little prospect of ever finding a decent job again, so why not? It was fine for a year or two. You can partake of the local women, enjoy good food in any number of restaurants, relax on the beaches, swim and snooze. However, all that becomes boring after a time. I tried mixing with the other ex pats but found them interested only in golf and talking about themselves. Gradually I became aware that the Russians were arriving in numbers. They were buying up businesses, owning many of the bars downtown. They were even sacking the Thai bargirls and bringing in Ukranian girls. I decided to sell up and sold my house (to a Russian) for a reasonable profit and came back to UK. So, if you are thinking of retiring to Hua His, I would advise that you are probably 10 years too late. If you are an avid golfer it might be for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

I agree with your assessment. We have a home in Hua Hin. If I were to choose a quieter location it would be Pran Buri. Easy access to Hua Hin and a nice vibe. They also have a Makro down that way for shopping.

Great narrative — but I think living in any small area as you are describing depends a lot if you have a good Thai woman on your side or not. Not only for navigating the language barrier, having company from a companion, sex, etc. but a single guy would go insane in those small places.

popped into Pran Buri after our trip to the Cave and the Freshwater Marsh. Ate at the Beach House Bar. Was lovely food and they were so nice. The frontage is amazing. Next time will go spend a few days soaking life up there.
