  I give you credit for interviewing the gentleman in the whaling industry. People need to be more willing to hear things they may or may not agree with. Things we do today or last year may be frowned upon one day. Along that line of whale oil, most people forgot that transmission fluid used to be made with whale oil until 1972. There were millions of transmission failures in 1973.  The next year car manufacturers had to change and adapt to new fluids and new designs. It is nearly entirely forgotten about in 2026.

  The 'strange' engine was in fact a compound steam engine. Compounding is where the steam is used twice to get as much energy out of it as possible, two and three times were common with some of the big ocean going liners may go to four times. In BC, on the lakes and the Fraser a lot of the Stern Wheel Steamers were compound, as were many on the Yukon. Boiler steam went into the small cylinder first and was exhausted into the larger cylinder second. From there it would go to a condenser for re-use in the boilers, a closed circuit system. 19 knots was fair, there were many, many steam ships faster, even many paddle steamers were faster (river, lake and marine).   A actual sailor who hunted whales was such a interesting tale. It has been over 50 years since whaling was stopped and to still have someone who had the perspective of it being part of the family every day job was super cool. The Kyle was a interesting drive around. Thanks for sharing.
