I feel like if Anakin was on trial he’d just accept any sentence brought down on him.

Thor, I think you put 100% more effort into the idea of Anakin's redemption than any of the writers did for Jean Gray in the new Spider-Man movie.

The idea you’re talking about is explored heavily in the IDW Transformers comics. Megatron during a battle with Shockwave declares he’s an Autobot and helps defeat Shockwave preventing him from rewriting history. Afterwards Megatron is taken in to custody and put on trial for all the crimes he committed during the war, he turns to the light but still faces the consequences of his time in the dark. The rest of his story deals heavily with Megatron realizing how far he’d gone astray from his original ideals and the atrocities he’d committed. He realizes the monster he became, the monster he embraced, but he still goes on to do good, even going against the radical Decepticons he personally forged. The story doesn’t make it easy for him and no one just outright forgives the things he’s done.
That’s what modern stories really lack, the struggle, the earning of redemption. They just say a few nice words and maybe have the person feel slightly bad then they’re perfect and didn’t do nothing wrong. They want the redemption without the work.

About BND, It would be one thing if she was only attacking Damage Control (though still morally-suspect based on what she knew at the time) but she is 1) using peoples minds and bodies as puppets 2) putting people in extreme danger if not outright killing them (talking about you, old man and the cab) and 3) mentally torturing Spider-Man instead of continuing to look for her sister. Spider-Man is well known as a hero, a great person, helped save half the universe, etc. Sure he works with Damage Control sometimes because they are essentially the police but he also does his own thing. Her not trusting him (even enough to say “hey the people you work with kidnapped my sister”) makes no sense.

One of the reason's Vader's redemption in the movie works is because he pays the price for it. He makes the decision to defy the emperor, saves Luke and give up his own life. If he did the same thing and survived that wouldn't be such a powerful act, but merely the first step to redemption. An important step, but only first of many.
That's why I don't like this trope in so many movies when absent or outright abusive parent shows up again in their kid's life after many years, does something nice, says "I've changed" and people are expected to forgive them. And when the kid hesitates there's usually a friend who says something like "my dad died when I was little and I miss him every day. You have a chance to spend time with yours. I wouldn't waste it." Except these are two different things, one kid's parent died and is remember fondly, the other one caused their kid to suffer! They want to be a good parent now? They need to work for it. They need to repay all that suffering. And the kid doesn't own them anything. They may never forgive them! Redemption comes at a high price, otherwise it's not redemption at all, merely a minor inconvenience.
If you messed up so badly and want to make up for it, be prepared to repay for the evil you've caused every single day of your life going forward. Or don't even bother.

I think the biggest problem with a lot of modern redemption stories is that they don't truly believe in evil, so there is no meaningful repentance. Vader is a mass murdering war criminal. If you don't accept that fact, him turning on the emperor and dying for his son has no weight.

I'd also argue, that people who think it must be "earned" are missing something. If something is earned, than there isn't a virtue in forgiving the flaw or fault, or sin. It has become a matter of justice, their forgiveness is due to them. What makes stories like the Prodigal Son so powerful, is because the titular son has done nothing to merit his father's forgiveness. Vader did nothing to earn his redemption, and even if he lived, frankly, there's probably nothing he could do in a lifetime to "earn" it.

Look up the story of Alessandro Serenelli. He murdered Maria Goretti when she was 11 and he was 20. After serving 27 years in prison, he went on to become a monk and lived to be 87. Maria's mother forgave him for the crime and even went to church with him afterwards. (There's a lot more to it than that, but I don't want to proselytize here.)

Thank you for another interesting video. Redemption is a tricky thing to get just right. To quote C.S. Lewis, "No creature that deserved Redemption would need to be redeemed. They that are whole need not the physician. Christ died for men precisely because men are not worth dying for; to make them worth it."

I think the idea of a life of service to others with no regard to your own wants or needs is the best option for Anakin at that point. It seems like the only way for him to be allowed to live is if he is a “True Jedi” and completely selfless form then forth only existing for the sake of improving the galaxy and its people as a whole which is perfect bc then Luke has a shining example of what a true Jedi COULD be when all attachments have been removed. I think the idea of a redeemed Vader being a Guardian Angel to the galaxy is perfect bc it doesn’t make for what he’s done, but neither does killing him and stopping any of the good that would come from devoting the rest of his life to that. Him being the Angel he saw in Padme while also being the best example he could be to his son (even if New Republic officials never agree) is just the most poetic ending you could get and honestly works just fine.

In the words of the maker, “It’s like poetry, it rhymes”

Redemption is not being forgiving. It's working to be better even though you can never make up for everything you did. Vader wasn't forgiving and he never will be. That's what makes his turn in the end matter. He's doing it for the right reasons.
