I find it amusing that over time "minimum standards" for coaches meant outdoor seating with splinters, then a roof to keep cinders from burning ladies dresses, then windows and padded seats, then wood stoves, then a vendor with a cart of snacks, then a toilet (which was basically a seat with a hole in the floor), then steam heating, then restaurant cars, then electrical heating, then air conditioning, then chemical toilets that didnt dump on the track and now accessible toilets, wireless internet and USB plugs.

Class 47's, class 43 HST, class 37's, and the list goes on and on, all staples of our railways for decades, and all designed and built right here in the UK.

The best workhorse on the rails, and I really like the variety of livery’s that these locos have on both heritage railways and mainline.

The true under appreciated workhorse of British Railways.

I was on the last Newcastle Liverpool with 47 443 North Eastern. It ran with several coaches in complete darkness as the lights were out, policemen patrolling the train, a very funereal atmosphere on board that train. I had to get off at Huddersfield with all the other regular Transpennine bashers, we all congregated at the platform end to watch it pull away, photos were taken, a long toot on the locos horn from the driver, and that was the end of that. Goodbyes were said, then the sprinter home to Leeds. The end. It was a very sad occasion.

Had plenty of class 47 and mk2 haulage from Southampton to New street in the 90s. And then onwards to Bescot for a days spotting

The primary Class 47 locomotive operating on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is No. 47077, famously named "North Star". Built in 1965 at Crewe Works, this 2,580-horsepower diesel-electric engine arrived on the NYMR on long-term loan from the Diesel and Electric Preservation Group in 2022 and is a regular sight on heritage services.
This loco is still operating regulary between Grosmont and Pickering and have been behind it quite a few times recently :)

Did my basic driver training on them. Good engines all round, though lacking sanding gear. The loco I passed to drive on still exists though out of service at Carnforth!

In 1963 at Standish, near Wigan, saw D1532 taking a WCML passenger service north at speed. The loco must have been on trials as it was a Stratford engine. An incredible sight. The next one heading north, that day , was hauled by Britannia Class 70016 Ariel - normally a cause of celebration. But even aged 11/12 I realised the Brush Type 4 was the future.

A great review. Brilliant archive footage of class 40s at the start. The footage of kestrel on test was mostly the Derby to Manchester line, now the monsal trail in the peak district. The first 20 class 47s became 47401 to 420. They were kept together, allocated to Gateshead , as the class 46s with the same electrical equipment were also based there. They were amongst the first withdrawals as they were non standard to the rest of the fleet.

Great video enjoyed very much appreciated. At 8:43 the train is hauling a rake of car flats with quite a few mk2 cortina's & mk 1 transit vans so I'd guess it was filmed around 1968 . Many thanks.

I love 47s, they’ve been with me all my life as I was built in 1965 and traveled on trains all my life with my priv pass.
