36:46 No you got it right- The Lieutenant called in an artillery barrage, but he gave them the wrong coordinates. So the bombs fell short and hit his own troops instead of the enemy. That's why Barnes went apeshit on him, then picked up the radio and told the artillery to "check your fire."

This is what was really going on in the village, and it's what makes the scene so powerful. The villagers were storing supplies for the VC, but that doesn't necessarily mean they were committed to the VC cause. They were just trying to survive.

Refusing to store VC supplies could be just as dangerous as being caught storing the supplies by Republic of Vietnam or American forces. The village was essentially walking a crooked line between two powerful forces, and that line could shift from moment to moment depending on who was in control and who was watching.

Barnes understood that something was going on, but instead of trying to determine the villagers' actual degree of complicity through evidence and interrogation, he resorted to physical violence and coercion. His suspicion became certainty in his own mind, and his anger ultimately overwhelmed whatever restraint or humanity he had left.

That's what makes his actions so disturbing. He wasn't simply angry at people he believed were helping the enemy. He turned an inherently ambiguous situation into collective punishment and unleashed his wrath on the villagers.

And that was the larger nightmare for U.S. forces in Vietnam: trying to separate the sheep from the goats when the people caught in the middle were often being coerced by both sides, and the distinction could shift from one moment to the next.

In 'Naked Gun' Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley's characters during a montage are laughing really hard coming out of a movie theater and when the camera pans up they just watched Platoon.

Oliver Stone, the director of this film, continued with the theme in his next film after that one, titled Born on the Fourth of July*, starring Tom Cruise in what is probably the best performance of his career. In that film, it tells the true story of a soldier’s return from Vietnam and everything he went through both during the war and upon his return, which was very difficult; it’s a great movie but also heartbreaking. In addition to Cruise, some actors from *Platoon reappear in it, such as Willem Dafoe and Tom Berenger (the sergeant with the scar on his face).

50:25 It's a phosphorous flare. Phosphorous is a chemical that burns brightly (and extremely hot) when exposed to oxygen. So the flare is launched into the air and comes down slowly on the parachute burning brightly- illuminating the battlefield.
