A friend and I were talking about this song the other day. I didn’t know how old the song was really, but I always thought a rapier was an oddly specific sword to mention. It turns out that the height of the rapier’s popularity was about 1650 and this song came around not too long afterwards. We also ended up talking about Leslie’s March dating back to the 1500s. I think we were waiting for a session to start.

I was raised on the Thin Lizzy version, and then I saw Metallica at download with my son, I have always loved the song

Thanks for this. My 12 year old self was blown away by Thin Lizzy playing this on TOTP. It was definitely the guitar riff that set it apart. My introduction to Irish music. Alongside Hendrix playing all along the watchtower and Neil Young's Heart of Gold it set the foundations of my musical taste.

I was in Sarajevo years ago and we had some Irish MPs (military police). One of them had a guitar and played old Irish songs. It was hypnotizing.

My father would come home from the pub singing this and black and tans.

I heard this on a brand new radio with lightweight headset as I was peddling round the Dingle Peninsula on one of the very few rainless days I experienced. Shouting it at the top of my lungs on a ferocious downhill plunge.

It reminds me of hearing the Dubliners at the first Cambridge Folk Festival - hearing them sing of whiskey when I could not afford a beer!

I bought Thin Lizzy's "Dedication" compilation album in 1991. "Whiskey in the Jar" was the first song and I loved it the first time I heard it. The guitar intro and the overall production was top tier.

I have introduced that song into an illegal drinking den in Burma, and a volunteer kitchen in Ukraine and everywhere, it is a hit.
