  My dad parachuted into Normandy just after midnight, British 6th Airborne, his battalion of 700 were tasked to silence Merville gun battery, so it couldn’t fire gold beach in the morning. Due to enemy fire, miss drops and wind, only 150 men were able to carry out the attack, 65 walked out after taking the battery, my dad was one of them, 19 years old. Will always be my hero

  When the medic asked for morphine after he was shot and bleeding out he was basically asking his friends for a mercy killing. You don&apos;t give morphine to someone who is bleeding heavily, morphine lowers blood pressure, heavy bleeding lowers blood pressure, the combo kills. As a medic he would know that. He asked his friends to kill him.

  When Hanks (Miller) reports his casualties, he&apos;s not talking about all of the casualties on that beach. &nbsp;He&apos;s a captain reporting to his major, and a captain commands a company (usually 3 platoons). &nbsp;His casualties were 35 dead and 70 wounded. &nbsp;A company usually consists of 150 men. &nbsp;So, 105 casualties out of 150 men.

  The landing on the beaches of Normandy is the biggest amphibic assault in history. Sidefact: The ship in Mass Effect was named after this battle.

  I saw this with my grandfather when it came out. &nbsp;He was an infantryman during the war, he fought in Italy and the Balkans, the opening scene had him crying uncontrollably. &nbsp;He never spoke about the war, but Im pretty sure that scene took him back to the war.

  I was a Navy Corpsman (counterparttoWade&apos;sDoc), &nbsp;I served 10 years, 8 with Marines. I saw this on a Tuesday afternoon, I did not want to be around crowds. &nbsp;There were 12 of us. Myself, and 11 others, all veterans. &nbsp;At the end of the movie, the house lights went up. All of us had teary eyes. One old man stated the following- &quot;As far as war movies go, that was the most accurate depiction I&apos;ve ever seen . As for the ACTUAL D-Day, it didn&apos;t come close&quot;<br>His hat said it all- D-Day Survivor, Purple Heart. I have always deferred to his expert knowledge. &nbsp;bad as you think it was as shown in the movie, it was much, much worse.<br>The US fought on Omaha &amp; Utah beaches. British on Gold &amp; Sword &amp; Canada on Juno. Allies lost approximately 4400 while estimates of the German casualties was around 9000. The movie showed D-Day in about 20 minutes, &nbsp;in reality it was about 9 hours to secure the beaches.

  Spielberg at this time was at his absolute best. He’s done some absolutely amazing work, and has been hugely influential in how movies are made today. Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. have all left their mark on cinematic history.

  Knowing what happens to him later, the medic plainly saying &quot;I don&apos;t know why I did that&quot; about faking being asleep gives me full body chills and makes me tear up every time.

  I remember when this movie came out, it was such an authentic representation of the Normandy invasion that veterans in theatres had panic attacks and had to leave in tears
