R Lee Ermey not being nominated or winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this roll is one of the biggest robberies in the history of film. He is incredible in this movie.

R. Lee Ermey was a friend of mine. He was an amazingly good person in real life. A real Marine who loved the Corps; always willing to take a moment out of his day to put on the act and dress down a fan to give them a treat to cherish for the rest of their lives. But it was the quieter times, sitting against the back of a pickup truck sipping on coffee, that you clearly saw that he deeply loved his country and his fellow Marines. He was a good man. I miss him.

For anyone that doesn’t know, R Lee Ermy ( the drill instructor) was a real drill instructor in Vietnam, the actor they hired didn’t cut it ( he became the door gunner in the helicopter scene ) so they had Ermy play the part, AND, most of his speeches / insults were not scripted, he just let it flow like back in the day
