Trouble is, I get bored when going under 25 knots.

We use to take our 17' Montauk Whaler out in storms on Lake Michigan. Strapped with a 100 hp Merc, we'd jump it off touring waves, flood it, get the engine running, and then punch it—The water would race out the back. Most fun you can have in a storm!

You really need to update... Look at lifeproof boats, they build for the coast guard and law enforcement and us wildlife service.

Thank you for the review. IMHO, while not an "expert" from my short time on the water, I'd prefer an aluminum or steel hull and dual main engines. 50/50 on Nordhavns, nice layout but fiberglass hulls and few with dual engines.

I own a Terhi475BR with exectly the same hulll construction and it can also be sawn in half and still float. However, its one thing the boat not being sinkable but sadly the crew would not survive if you were stupid enough to go out in a huricane, so it renders the whole point irrelevant.

That is a good idea, go out in a Boston whaler in a hurricane.

Forgot to mention the Rigid Haul Inflatable boats of Rayglass (Protector) and Zodiac Milpro (aptly named Hurricane). Your freighter goes down in a Typhoon, going to be a New Zealand Coast Guard Protector that saves your bacon. Both boats rated for Beaufort Force 8.

This wouldn't have been complete without the "West Snail" being mentioned. While I have virtually no experience in sailing (Hobie Cat and sailing canoes only), it is a topic that has always had my curiosity. I have read a lot about the Westsail's durability and survivability, including the story that they have mentioned. While it would be hubristic to say unsinkable (not to mention that history has show such claims seem to doom ships), the Westsail would give me a high degree of confidence.

That being said, I have been canoeing since the mid 80s. Having paddled in 4' waves in a Bell Yellowstone without a spray deck for 6 hours (first time at Lake Superior and I was running from a storm, I was hallucinating by the time I made landfall) and a Wilderness Systems Tsunami 14 in 7' waves for an hour (playing in a bay of Grand Island years later), these situations would have been fatal if I wasn't running marathons at the time and had massive stamina. It is interesting how quickly calm waters can change their mind and catch you off guard.

In the Fastnet race it was their weak, racing spec., lightweight standing rigging that doomed most of the sunk or dis-masted yachts.

Nordhavn is the way to go. Even if things break ,almost every life depending system has a back up.
