The 5th Dimension were singing songs from a Broadway musical Hair.   That explains the strange titles, as these songs were part of the play.

The story of “Sugar, Sugar” is hilarious. Don Kirshner, music manager for the Monkees, heard the song, written by professional songwriters, and thought it could be a hit for the Monkees, but the band hated it and refused to do it. Kirshner was incensed, and decided to start a second fictional band, composed of cartoon characters who could not talk back - the Archies.

My comment is about you. You are adorable, positive and respectful of music from when your grandparents were young. You never mock or make fun of things in the past. I also enjoy you pointing out things in the music that I would not have noticed. It's a pleasure to tun in to you.

The Temptations were by no means the "first boy band".  If you look back into the 50s and 40s (and before) you'll find plenty of all-female, all-male, and mixed vocal-only  groups (or groups mostly known for their vocals).  They might not all have had "top 5 hits" but they were there.  Just a few, stylistically not too far form The Temptations: The Spinners, The Four Tops, The O'Jays; The Delfonics.  All worth hearing. If you dig, you'll find lots and lots in all genres.
