Baden-baden, Germany has retractable bollards that only allow buses into the area around Hotel am Sophienpark. It isn't a very large city (60k) but the system worked pretty well from what I saw and made a nice pedestrian friendly environment in the plaza it was used in. It didn't protect the lanes though, only one plaza.

Bus lane cameras are certainly not a thing of the last five years, London has had them since the 90s with automatic number plate recognition I think from the start.

You can very often find automated gates in the netherlands. However they are often in city centers, where cars are normally not allowed to go. They do often allow people who live in the area to enter as well

I like the deep dives on topics or locations. If there’s actually 10-15 minutes worth of quality talking to do about it, then I don’t think it matters if it’s about busses, planes or other modes.

The "1.5k accidents, 32 deaths in 6 years" in Ahmedabad from bus lane violations stat is horrifying. Shows how important road safety infrastructure is.

Separately, one thing ive seen with the bus gates designed to "ruin your car" in my city is that the some yank tank drivers can still go over them.

On the topic of gates for busses: a city near mine has some places with retractable poles to act as a bus gate. When the bus nears they sink into the ground and when it's passed they resurface.

Of course it also only works for slow moving traffic and doesn't help against bikes, but I think it's a better solution than a literal gate that has to swing open

The problem is that police themselves block bus lanes in my city and politicians are too weak to enforce laws

Camera's on the front of busses are great, but I would prefer we outrig them with battering rams.

on the topic of guided busways, trams are great for this because you can remove the pavement from the tram's RoW which doesn't affect the tram but does make it harder for cars to drive on the tramway

"no sane person would drive into oncoming traffic to try to shave a few minutes"

welcome to Southeast Asia

Thailand in particular, I've been stuck in traffic more often than I can count because some normally insane people literally drove into oncoming traffic and get stuck, freezing the whole road while waiting to go back to their side of their packed lane
