Taking Back Space from Cars Doesn't Have to Be Hard

I think one advantage of the wider roads we have on the West Coast and in the Midwest is that we can make them narrower and safer. It's much harder to add bike lanes, parklets, and other things we yearn for in public space to roads that are already narrow. Great video and enjoyed seeing this vision for a Chicago neighborhood.

Lived in this area for the last two years- There was traffic calming added to nearby Unity Park by Kimball to extend the curbs for bus stops and it helped walkability a lot!
...unfortunately, guys with no mufflers/loud exhausts still ruin the vibe even with all the traffic calming in the world 😅

Hey Keith! I'm starting a small neighborhood group up in Rogers Park. Our goal is to work with IDOT to make north Sheridan road safer.

I love planning with incremental change! That way we can be open to how small changes actually affect people and plan our next step accordingly. Great video!

After living at the western intersection of Palmer Sq. at Kedzie for years, I proposed a similar narrowing (causing drivers to self organize by which direction they are headed before the arrive at the approaches to the intersection) to the alderman a decade ago & the alderman absolutely stonewalled me, even though I was on the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee at the time, & my proposal eliminated zero parking spaces, nor actual road capacity. Really hopeful that the changes in ward staff over the past few years pave the way (pun intended) for this effort to make progress. I really enjoyed the video.

Thanks for highlighting my neighborhood! I also advocate for biking and walking infrastructure in Logan Square! I'll have to reach out to Eddie :)

The very first thought I had was to make this a giant roundabout. Cars would naturally slow down because of the curves

Eddie rules, I’m so glad I got to meet him through Strong Towns Chicago. Great video, and I hope it inspires more people to make their places better!

I walked thru there a few weeks ago going up Kedzie on the west side. I just went around the outskirts and didn't actually go in the square since crossing the roads seemed very uninviting. I'm all for the changes Eddie is proposing, would have definitely stopped for a while if it was easier to access on foot. Keep up the good work!

After never visiting Palmer Square in my first 6 years in Chicago, I've been there at least half a dozen times this summer. Chi.Meanderings bike ride starts there, Medowlark is down the block, and my film lab is nearby.

I found the road design utterly baffling. It's so inefficient for cars. It's so inefficient in use of space. It ruins the park. And it's dangerous.

Really excited about this project!
