  10mm’s advantage is not raw power compared with heavy revolver cartridges; it is the practical combination of **adequate penetration, shootability, capacity, portability, and faster follow-up shots**. It is still a handgun, and handguns are a last-ditch tool against large bears.

  A bear with bullet holes can still kill you before it dies. Its like shooting a car, you still get ran over.

  Speaking of movement, if you've got time, take a knee when charged. This is so you're not shooting over the back of a moving target, and you're shooting on the same level as the bear, mitigating misses.

  My old story.  I went walking a forest road in New Mexico with wife, saw a black bear at about 70 yards on the road, it charged us and I fired one round in the air to scare off bear, which didn’t work, I started shooting bear at about 30 yards, bear got to about 3’ before it veered to my right and I shot 3 times in the ribs as it ran by.  Bear stopped about 20’ away, breathing hard and I shot it one more time, dropped it.  Used a Beretta 92 with 9mm fmj ammo, medium sized bear.

  I live in N. Idaho and just this morning my brother and I were picking berries and came upon a bear. I drew my sig x10 and kept it in the low ready position. The bear looked up, saw us , grunted and walked away. Ill continue to carry my 10mm when Im in the wilderness.

  Excellent advice, the only time I was near a bear is during a forest fire, they came to town to escape the fire. Bear firearm 30-06.

  Never been charged by a bear, but I have been charged by three wild hogs (on three different occasions) that outweighed me by at least 100 lbs.  Two of them were taken care of by my 10 mm G40, the other by my .454 Casull Ruger Toklat.   Two of them got so close I had to jump aside to avoid getting hit by their tumbling carcass (one hog I shot was so close the bullet entered the top of his skull and exited behind his chin). The thing most people don't realize is that, yes, you have very little time to get a shot or two off, but things moving straight towards you become infinitely easier to hit.

  I’ve never been attacked by a bear but I have been in a gunfight w/my issued thirty-eight.  Control over the gun’s recoil is paramount in getting hits and saving your life.

  I know a guy (used to be my employee) who shot an older, 400 lb Wyoming grizzly with a Taurus Tracker in .41 Mag. Sorry, no bullet info. One warning shot, two to the chest, dropped at his feet. He was carrying out a quartered elk.<br><br>A hundred years ago, William Wright was a bear hunter. He had a Winchester Single Shot in .45-100 using 600gr lead bullets. He could shoot 3 aimed shots in 12 seconds. He once killed 5 bears in 5 minutes with 5 shots.
