British game departments were issued with .404 Jefferey; most PHs I knew had a .470 double as a back-up, though Harry Selby favoured the .416; I have shot buffalo successfully with a .375, though I have a number of friends who favour the .416. Rigby is thriving in London under the inspired management of Marc Newton.

That is why, when hunting dangerous game, you take 3 others with you and each person carrying a double barrel rifle. This way you have 8 shots instead of 2.

I recently received my Parkwest Arms SD-76 Dark Continent in 416 Rigby and absolutely my dream gun

What impressed me most was that Rigby deliberately chose reliability over raw power. A heavy bullet at moderate velocity on a Mauser controlled-feed action may not have looked spectacular on paper, but when a wounded buffalo was charging from ten yards away, certainty mattered more than velocity.

Here in Brazil we still can use this riffle with the Big Chupacabras .

I still have the utmost trust in my Ruger Alaskan Guide rifle chambered in .375 Ruger. Despite being a slightly smaller case compared to the 375 H&H the 375 Ruger has higher capacity and a slight advantage over the H&H. Honestly the only advantage the H&H has over the Ruger is ammo availability but finding 375 Ruger online is as easy as a couple clicks and tends to be cheaper then H&H

I've only shot one 4 times. Tooth fillings have shaken loose from lesser recoil.

The 416 Rigby was never trusted more than any other.

7:58 I'm not quite sure what rifle I'm looking at here. Anybody, help?

Criminy, the 416 Rigby was largely unknown until the 1950s. There were no more than 200 of them even made until some time after WWII. 404 Jeffery was THE magazine rifle up until the 1950s. PHs would've used either that or one of a handful of double rifles like 470 and 500 NE. Holland & Hollands wonderful little 375 was popular, but it was NEVER in the same league as the 404 or the doubles.

There were few other real choices. 458 Win mag didn't come along until 1956, 458 Lott in the 1970s, 416 Rem mag in the 1990s, I think.

416 Rigby is popular with hunters, but PHs generally go with something bigger - 458 Win mag/Lott, 450/470/500 NE, 500 Jeffery, or 505 Gibbs.

After hunting in Africa over decades and getting the big 5 more than five times over, my preffered choice is the .416 Rigby. The bullit goes through any scull and is never found (bad shots need knock down). It is the most reliable and trusting round i know, and it gives you one more round in a Mouser action. I have used double rifles (500NE), repetions like 458 Lott, 500A-Squre etc., but there is no more reliable round than the Rigby! Compared to the .416 RemMag it provides more punch but is as well more reliable. My only choice lately and a silent contender still in Africa.
I have stopped using doubles due to the fact that if the second shot is made, you need a third or a forth, which doubles just inherently are not capable to do. .416 Rigby is my preferred choice of 5 round action.
