I use cut mullet and one of the best tips I can give is to ditch the fillet knife and go buy a serrated bread slicing knife with an offset handle. The serrated blade stays sharp much longer cutting through the tough mullet scales and the offset handle lets you cut on a flat surface without your knuckles getting in the way. Even the cheap one they sell at Walmart works great. Also, a small cheap $1.99 cutting board will keep your boat, kayak or fancy ice chest top from getting bloody and tore up. For slot reds, I would have got about 5-7 pieces out of the mullet you cut up. With the serrated knife you will be able to split the mullet head in half down its face and get two more pieces. Tight lines 😊

I filet both sides and cut each filet into pieces. Works like a charm.

I’m a local fish that eats mullet and agrees with this message. Generally, I prefer my mullet steaks slightly seasoned, seared, and rested for 2-3 mins before I eat them but this method works also.

Cut mullet is my favorite bait for summer time redfish on the flats here in Pensacola. I rig it the exact way you been telling us to do for years and I always have some success. Thanks for the tips man!

Im going to add to this. Pinfish will eat this cut mullet up the second it hits the water. It will sit for very little time before its mostly gone. Now , if you wish to hold your bait a little longer. Set a side line on a swivel off to the side of ya main line about 1 foot to 1.5 foot from the bottom as Pinfish like to stay in the grass or down to the bottom. They generally do not like to travel up because they do not want to be the target. I usually put a line about 6 to 10 inches off the side , and i use about a 1 ounce weight to hold bottom so it don't drift. I usually put a small cork float next to the circle hook, usually a 3 ought or 4 ought hook. That way you can cast out and the bait rides in the 1 foot off the bottom range. Pinfish are less likely to tear it up fast. You can set depth off the bottom more in deeper water , If ya in 5 foot deep or more , I would do like 2 foot off the bottom.

All solid points! The largest drum I ever landed was from the surf on a menhaden tail, granted I was using a pyramid weight on a fish finder rig. Tight lines!

Redfish love heads. I put a little more meat with the head and kill reds with them.
