I sit down with my wife and talk. We have burrial plots and plans. I go over everything she should be entitled to when I'm gone. I even have pre-filled forms that she will need when I'm gone. She knows where all the documents are. Hoping this makes things much smoother, should I pass before her.

I have a binder with all of my paperwork in it. The first page is “What to do when I die”. It list every place that needs to be contacted to stop my checks. What to do to start my wife’s portions. Included in this is DIC. Also listed is all my bank accounts, investment accounts , credit cards, etc. No need to try and find out where money is located. My wife and children all know where it’s located and what to do.

It’s super important to have a file folder with banking, life insurance and any wills and power of attorney documents printed with passwords etc. I have a folder for my minor son. My ex knows where it is too, and he’s a fellow vet.

Making sure spouses get DIC means having every medical record lined up perfectly before filing, which is where solid third-party support services really help out. Reputable private support services actually advocate for clear rules to keep bad actors out of the space while keeping legitimate help available. Cutting off external resources just leaves surviving spouses stranded during an already terrible time.

I’ve had my 100% rating for 20 years now. Been married for 29 years. I’m going to fill out paperwork now so all she has to do is date it and turn it in. Thanks for this information.

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) highlights a tough reality: families must understand survivor benefits before a crisis hits. Many spouses are blindsided by strict rules, like service-connected death causes or the timeline requirements for a 100% disability rating. Organizing records now is the only way to protect your family from financial stress later. <br>This underscores why the VFW feels out of touch. Modern veterans expect VSOs to do more than lobby Congress; we need them actively educating families on their earned benefits. Advocacy can&apos;t just be defense on Capitol Hill, it must ensure families know how to access support when they need it most. The organizations prioritizing outreach and education are the ones veterans trust.

So what if the veteran died in 2020 from a newly added VA Service Related respiratory disease just this year? He received treatment for it for just over 10 years by his private physician. When it was recommended he go to the VA for further treatment. He received many months of treatments with the VA hospital and the physician there did recognize the condition immediately as Service Related and was told to file a claim if he hadn’t already. He submitted a claim in 2019 but it was denied. He became too ill and he/we never followed up on it. So yes…this spouse found this video on the internet after he is gone! But &nbsp;dealing with the VA should be a lot easier for our Vets. It is ridiculous! Thx.

I lost almost 20 years of benefits because I was stubborn. &nbsp;I understand now that I had made a mistake and I will have to work harder now because of it to gather everything together.

My Vietnam era Air Force &quot;noble brother-in-law &apos;Frank&apos; REALLY needed to see this video 2 years ago before his heart attack in 2025. &nbsp; My sister has nothing now.
