What really sank Musashi? That's easy. The ship's weight became greater than the upward buoyant force from the water.

I've never been so happy at getting mislead by a title.

Important point of note:

Magnesium burns hot, but it's not what makes the thermite burn so hot, it's just there to get the aluminium and iron oxide up to temperature to kick off the reaction. It's the reaction between the iron oxide and the aluminium that generates so high a temperature, not the magnesium.

Also, starlight shells generally use magnesium, as it burns incredibly brightly. So I'd not blame this on the magnesium per se , though I would also like to add that as a former chemist (not an artillerist or explosives expert mind) the idea of having several tons of thermite in one place, mixed, primed and ready to go gives me the cold sweats. All it would take is enough heat to start the magnesium burning (which is not that much), and well, you'd have what's described in the video.

I think Ryan posted this video and immediately went on vacation.

Lots of respect for Mr. Lundgren, who is one of the people correcting the history of the Pacific war through by actually cross-checking US and Japanese sources. His "The World Wonder'd" uses the surviving documents from both sides to construct a timeline that convincingly demonstrates that the conventional (e.g. Morrison's) narrative of the Battle off Samar is largely wrong due to Morrison's failure to account for the fog of war and his uncritical acceptance of US sources who were often simply wrong or confused. It's not disrespecting their memory to admit that they got things wrong or confused in the middle of a very chaotic battle.

The whole video was about Kirishima, so I guess we'll never know what really sank Musashi.

Great interview with Robert Lundgren, one of the guys who puts out some of the best stuff on World War II and warships. Really informative!

Good god the idea of magnesium incendiary shells cooking off in your magazine is utter horrifying. Right up there with Beatty's cordite handling practices in terms of monumentally dangerous ammunition handling practices

Wow, this is some really thought provoking stuff! Hot enough to decompose H2O is no joke. The fire damage makes a ton of sense. Thanks for sharing!

Technically it’s incorrect to speak of carbon dioxide or water or nitrogen as fuel for a magnesium fire. The magnesium itself is the fuel. The other is the oxidizer.

This may just be the most metal way I’ve ever heard of a ship sinking
