Even if the departure from your home is YEARS away, start unloading the things you don’t use / don’t need NOW. Commit to removing 3-5 items/week. Your future self will thank you!

We just went through this, 3 weeks planning for garage sale, 90% of the household was advertised for sale on FB and EVERYTHING except for 2 small items was listed for 25 cents. EVERYTHING. Almost everything sold and most of the money made was from donations because people felt obligated to pay more than the 25 cent advertised price. It became part of the process, people ask how much, we tell them everything is 25 cents but donations are accepted. The word spread, more and more people showed up. We helped many families in need and made some money and in 3 days 99% of the "stuff" was gone.

I donate my old clean towels to my local dog shelter. They are always needed and they're always grateful

I would suggest forgetting about what money you can make from your stuff and focusing instead on how much of it you can avoid putting in a landfill.

I had to widowed childless sisters who passed away within 4 months of each other and it was up to us 4 remaing siblings to liquidate both households and sell their homes We chose to sell nothing. Family members were given anything they wanted or could use for themselves or their children. A lot of items were donated to area charity thrift shops. Fortunately a niece had connections with a women's shelter who accepted clothing, small appliances, kitchenware, bedding, towels, etc. for women starting a new life moving into apartments and small homes. I strongly suggest donating to women's shelters in your area.

When my wife’s step-father was moving into a care facility, it was stunning to me to watch all his stuff become junk to get rid of. None of his family or kids wanted it….we all had our houses full. It made me sad, because I knew the same would happen to our stuff.

Man, did we love downsizing from 3000sf to a 32’ fifth wheel then in to our backpacks. My brother and sister looked at a picture of our backpacks that i described as “our whole world” and commented, “That’s sad”. The same photo to our adult kids, “That’s so great”. Raised them well.
