We have been retired eight years and all our friends and family told us to sell our farm when we retired. We live on a 113 acre property with a five bedroom house. Turns out staying put was a great decision. We lease the crop fields to a local farmer and we take care of the rest of the property ourselves. My wife and I have a reason to get up in the morning and are both surprisingly fit for people in their seventies. I attribute this to our very active lifestyle.

my 98 year old aunt lives on 3 floor no elevator , she ha been living by her self for last 40 years , one reason she is still alive and can walk down and up is due to daily hard exercise , she walks down and up every day still !!

We downsized our stuff but not our home

We sold our water front home of 22 years when it became too big a burden to maintain. We rented for a year to get a feel for what comes next, then we found the perfect home, one story with a finished basement and a great kitchen for my wife who loves to cook. There are always some compromises we have to make as we get older. We are in our eighties. We are down to one car plus a class C motorhome. My advice is to take your time and make sure it works for you. The most important thing for us is to be debt free.

I’m 69 and live in a massive house that we built 33 years ago. I can’t even imagine downsizing, we have frequent quests some of whom stay months at a time. Plus I love taking care of and improving our beautiful home!

Not leaving our home. It’s paid off, has everything we worked so hard for and still enjoy, wonderful location and lots to do!

Always amazes me that people have so much crap that they need a storage unit. I know there are sometimes special circumstances where you may need on temporarily, but in the US, we just have too much crap.

I downsized. My first requirement was a single story home. I found what I wanted in a 55+ community. Been here 2 years and I love it!

After retirement…about a year…I “ downsized” …I ended up with a bigger house in a less expensive area….much more affordable! So I “ downsized” my expenses!

For seniors moving forward, get a one level place! You can ALWAYS find stairs to exercise! But if you run into a few joint “ glitches” as you age, you’ll appreciate one level!👍🏻

My mom lived in a 2 story house and gardened until she was 91. I'd say that's a good goal, keep active. It's more than just being able to climb stairs but feeling better as you get older. I'm still going up and down stairs many times a day at 69.
