6 Low Maintenance Japanese Garden Plants EVERYONE's Nursery Already Sells

If you've stood in the garden center aisle reading tags that never say what a plant is for, or whether it spreads, start here: thesmallgardenbook.com It has the tag audit, three native candidates for your region sized before you buy, and why a Japanese nursery sells the tree pruned small. 379 pages, 88 chapters, every claim sourced. $47 early-bird, 30-day refund. I grew up in a Japanese house. I've now lived in America longer than I lived in Japan. Everyone assumes the plants in a Japanese garden were chosen for calm. They were chosen because they fit. When land is priced by the square metre, every plant has to hold a job and stay the size it was bought at, so the nursery there sells form, and ours sells speed. Six plants that are already on the pallet at your garden center, each with its job, one line of care, and the native plant that could do that job instead. The sixth is the one that stood at my mother's gate, though not the way you'd guess. One plant from Japanese front doors is in here only as a warning. Nandina is listed as invasive across the Southeast, from Texas to North Carolina, and Florida's university assessment now lists it as prohibited. Liriope, sold next to mondo grass as "monkey grass," is on invasive lists in Tennessee, Georgia, and northern Virginia. Check your state's invasive list before anything goes in the cart. Pieris and azalea are toxic to dogs and cats. The native-plant movement has the stronger argument for most of your yard, and I say so in the video: keep the Japanese bones and let natives be most of the rest. Camellia and mondo grass want zone 7 and warmer, and in the far North most of this list won't see February, so there your region's native list is the whole list. If you make it to the end, leave one word in the comments: done. And tell me which spot on your lot is getting its one plant, the north strip, the bare corner, or the window with nothing to look at in January.
