I grew up in a Japanese house with a garden smaller than an American parking space. It had a persimmon tree, a stone, vegetables my mother still grows in her seventies, and no lawn — because in Japan, almost nobody has one. Everyone tells you Japanese gardens look that way because of Zen. Restraint. An eye for beauty. They don't. It's machinery — land prices, a tax rule, a fence law, a nursery industry that sells trees pruned to stay small. Someone decided all of it, and most of it works better in your yard than what the garden center is selling you. This channel is about the garden.
