The amount of videos I've seen telling people not to run sponges under tap water, only in old tank water, but also showing a clip of someone running the sponge under a tap when talking about cleaning it, is quite strange.

Nobody can beat a canister filter; it has 5 stages of filters and saves space for fish to swim around.

The video forgets to say about available food stuff for the bacteria. So it doesn’t matter how big of a container you have of medium for bacteria if it doesn’t have the food or oxygen it’s still is not going to increase significantly. As the food stuff increases, the bacteria load will increase along with it along with its demand for oxygen. Moving water too slowly means ammonia can build up because you’re not letting it reach the bacteria colonies to oxidize it in a timely manner.
