I retired at 60 but claimed Social Security at 70. I didn't and don't need the money, but wanted the biggest longevity insurance for my wife if she outlives me. For her peace of mind.

Dear Geoff,
I do believe there is an elephant in the living room you missed when it comes to the ages on the number line (62 FRA, and.age70)
....and that is age 65 and becoming eligible for Medicare.
I retired from a blue chip/DOW listed company and I can tell you thousands of my co-workers were anchored to age 65--i.e. when they were Medicare eligible, in order to punch out because our company quit offering healthcare at retirement.

Accordingly many people simultaneously left the company at age 65, took their pension and activated Social Security to cover Medi-Gap or their Medicare Advantage plan they selected for.

Medicare at age 65 is definitely an anchor, and the way things are going it wouldn't surprise me if that eligibility age starts heading north to take some of
financial stress off of Medicare.

I had cancer at 59. I took SS at 62 due to not knowing the future. I don't regret it.

Last time I added money to my IRA was 29 years ago. Had 2 downturns were the amount dropped by approx. 25%. I never panicked and today the account is worth 10 times the original cash investment.

Very informative - I was unaware that one gets a monthly kick instead of just a yearly kick (in other words, I thought that if FRA was 67, to get any increase you had to wait until age 68). So with the monthly effect, one can say choose to start at age 67 and 6 months (or however many months) and get an increase.

You’re missing the fundamental reason those three ages exist. Age 62 is the earliest you can claim Social Security, and for many people it isn’t a choice—it’s a necessity. At full retirement age, you can work without any earnings penalty. And at 70, the 8% annual increase stops—there is no further benefit to waiting. That’s 99% of the reason those three ages matter.

Everyone I know that took it "early" spent it. They quit working and lived on that money and did not invest. I waited until a year or two after FRA, for one reason because I'm several years older than my wife who had a much lower income. So if I pass first, she has a significantly larger benefit.

I guess I am the oddball. I started talking SS at age 64.75 years when I was told by my last employer that my services were no longer required. I could have waited, but I did not want to take anything from my retirement savings.

Social Security adjusts month by month for whenever you wish to begin benefits.

I'm taking it at 67. Just 5 months to go. I can continue to work beyond that without any penalty on my SS benefits. Then I can build up a few more dollars before I retire. My job pays well, so even a few extra months will help.

At 62 I figured out that by waiting until full retirement age it would take me 11 years to recoup the difference. Since there is no longevity it my family I wasn’t about to wait.

Geoff, the hiking boot analogy was brilliant. You got dangerously close to describing choice architecture in the beginning of the video. If you haven't read the Nudge book by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, I would highly recommend it.
